Every year hundreds of domestic animals (both companion and farm) fall victim to abuse and neglect in Washington County. The lucky ones are either rescued by rescue organizations or seized by humane officers. The medical costs associated with their recovery from abuse and neglect often runs into thousands of dollars.
Rescues and shelters are non-profit organizations who rely on donations and grants to continue their work of saving animals. Realizing the financial strain placed on these organizations, WAARF has been created to reimbursement rescues/shelters for major medical expenses incurred in returning the victims of abuse and neglect to health. WAARF is a 501c3 registered both with Department of State and Department of Charities. Therefore, donations are tax deductible.
In addition to assisting rescues/shelters with major medical costs, WAARF will also reimburse law enforcement for major medical costs associated with K9 both active and retired. Not only are the K9’s at risk for injury in the performance of their jobs but as they age they are also susceptible to disease.
The Washington County Treasurer's office will receive all voluntary contributions to WAARF and hold those funds in a separate account. The non-profit board of WAARF has established their procedures and protocols to respond to requests for assistance from qualified animal shelters, rescues, humane officers, police departments, and services. Animal shelters and animal caregivers apply for reimbursement of direct patient major medical care expenses for abused, neglected animals. Reimbursement is as follows: bills over $100 will be reimbursed at 50%, up to $500, not to exceed $1000 per rescue (contingent upon available funds).
Supporting WAARF is simple. Funds will be requested by donations contributed by owners purchasing annual pet licenses and the general public.
